In Luke 12:16-21, Jesus teaches us that our lives should not be consumed with self-absorption but with building and leaving a legacy. How we build in the many compartments of our lives – spiritual, familial, physical, social, vocational and financial – will determine the legacy we leave. To build, live and leave a legacy for the next generation, we must, first of all, leave an example in word, conduct, love, spirit, faith and purity (I Timothy 4:12). Secondly, there must be integrity in our lives. The way we live is what people remember most about us. Thirdly, there must be some kind of accomplishment. We won’t be remembered for how long we have lived; we will only be remembered for our contribution to society. In leaving a legacy, there must be those who are equipped and qualified to keep it after we are gone. A legacy will only remain if the next generation has the same value system as the previous one. “And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also” (2 Timothy 2:2).
